European Pork

EU Pigmeat Market

Pork is the most widely eaten meat in the world accounting for over 36% of the world’s meat trade and is the main meat produced within the EU.

The EU is the world’s second biggest producer of pigmeat after China and the world’s largest exporter.
There are over 250 million pigs slaughtered annually in the EU which equates to around 24 million tonnes carcass weight.

In Ireland, pork is the third largest agricultural product, behind beef and dairy and accounts for 8% of our gross agricultural product.

The single European currency, the EURO, was launched in 1999. More than 340 million EU citizens in 19 countries now use it as their currency. Ireland is located in the western part of Europe bound by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish sea.
