What is Origin Green?
Launched in 2012, Origin Green is a national sustainability programme for Ireland’s entire food and drink industry.
It is the only food and drink sustainability programme in the world operating on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector and food producers through Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board.
Working across all levels of the supply chain, this independently verified programme, enables Ireland’s farmers, food producers and retail and foodservice operators to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets – reduce environmental impact, serve local communities more effectively and protect the rich natural resources that Ireland enjoys.
Beef farmers in Ireland participate in Origin Green through the Sustainable Beef and Lamb Assurance Scheme (SBLAS), which sets out specific requirements for best practice on Irish beef farms, including animal health and welfare, land management, biosecurity and safe farming practices. SBLAS provides a framework for measuring the continuous improvement of each participating farmer, recording and monitoring environmental credentials at the farm level.
As part of SBLAS, Ireland has developed carbon footprint models for beef with the Carbon Trust and, today, Ireland is one of the most carbon-efficient beef producers within the EU. This transparent commitment by Irish farmers to improving their environmental performance allows retailers and foodservice clients of Irish beef to more easily meet their own commitments to sustainability.
